The Backup Boyfriend - River Jaymes

THE BACKUP BOYFRIEND
BY
RIVER JAYMES

SYNOPSIS:
Professionally, Dr. Alec Johnson has almost reached his goals. As this year's recipient of a humanitarian award with his ex, Dr. Tyler Hall. Alec's work with the homeless is about to recognized. Unfortunately his personal life sucks because now he has to attend several events alongside Tyler--with his ex's new boyfriend in tow. In an attempt to lift his mood and break out of his rut, Alec purchases a motorcycle he has no idea how to start.
Dylan Booth doesn't have time for Dr. Clueless and his fickle 1964 Harley, but the cocky mechanic can't say no to his request for help. Having spent ten years on the streets, and flooding his best friend to HIV, Dylan decides teaching the do-gooder how to ride is the least he can do. But watching Alec flounder in his ex's company throws Dylan into protector mode, and the confirmed hetero introduces himself as Alec's new boy friend.
The ex suspects Dylan is lying.
Alec claims Dylan's plan is insane.
And Dylan's not sure he can fake being gay.
But Dylan is a master bullshitter, and the phony PDA soon turns ultra-hot. Alec can't afford to get attatched, and Dylan learned everyone eventually leaves. Unfortunately, playing the backup boyfriend is starting to feel way to real....
JEN'S REVIEW
FIVE STARS
Wow, what a great book to start my 2014 year off.  River Jaymes rocked this story out. I ABSOLUTELY loved the concept of these dynamic characters. You know the one...pretending to move on with the fake new guy to get the old guy jealous out of his mind. So old school but one you can always count on to have an impact. Well, this book did not disappoint. The characters were strong, sexy, romantic and funny. I loved all the humorous banter and Noah was a hoot.
Alec is in a "mid-heart crisis" after the end of what he saw as a forever relationship. He is crushed and needs a big change..so what does he do? What all men do when they need to feel better about life...he buys a Harley! Now never mind you he knows nothing about them and can't really even ride it. Enter the "straight" sexy as he'll, Dylan. He owns his own bike shop...sighs..seriously who doesn't find a man who rides and works on motorcycles FREAKING HOT!! Dylan has had a tough life and with it his is heart made of steel, but something just tells him he needs to help Alec with his bike. When Alec's ex, Tyler flaunts his new guy in front of Alec with Dylan watching the back up boyfriend plan takes action. Dylan just never expected to loose his heart in the execution. Can Dylan take a chance on love and can Alec be patient enough to let it happen?
This story was truly about healing and learning to trust your heart. I was totally invested in Alec and Dylan in the first chapter. The story just flowed off the pages and I couldn't put it down. Such an awesome job by River Jaymes. If you haven't given this book look yet you are missing out. I loved it.

  2. Great review, Jen. I like how you called it a "mid-heart crisis". I read this book too and the sex scenes were so hot. This book has a great but simple set up. I can understand why so many people are interested in it. She is brilliant at pacing and letting the relationship build naturally over time. But although I did enjoy it overall, I have to be honest that I had to force myself through a lot of it. I will say though that Noah seriously got on my nerves. I just wanted to smack him or throw him over a cliff somewhere. Every time he came on the page, he irritated me. What did you think of him? -- Jamie Lake (author of "The Trainer")
